Academic Curricula

Introduction

Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science, MLAB) is a health profession with its solid foundation in the supporting basic sciences of chemistry, biology, statistics, management, and physics. Clinical Laboratory Science is a challenging career as well as a satisfying and demanding profession for persons with an interest in the applicatioen of the basic sciences and major specific courses to the clinical diagnosis of disease. Clinical laboratory scientists contribute to the development and application of new technologies for the improved diagnosis of pathologic conditions and diseases. Specific courses, focus on all of the major clinical disciplines including hematology, immunology, immunohematology, hemostasis, histopathology and cytopathology, clinical microbiology, clinical chemistry and body fluids. Each course is designed to prepare students for their roles as (Highly qualified Technologists/Specialists) laboratorians.

In addition, students are introduced to the emerging discipline of molecular pathology and the role that it is beginning to play in the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of disease.

Consistent with the University’s and College’s Mission Statement, the goals of Medical Lab Sciences Program are to:

§ Provide the students with the essential academic background, learning experiences and appropriate training to enable them to accomplish the recognized standards of a competent self-directed Technologist.

§ Apply and provide safe, competent and therapeutic care to the community using appropriate technology.

§ Exercise independent work, critical thinking and problem solving skills

§ Develop and instill professional attitudes and sound working practices.

§ Communicate and collaborate with individuals, patients, families through the teaching learning process to augment and promote optimal health.

§ Develop and make use of resources and responsible funding/revenue utilization.

§ Apply management principles in promoting/directing care and in own medical sciences practice.

§ Exercise responsibility for the promotion of change in health care in response to social, cultural, political and economic factories.

Program Outcome

Upon the completion of the program, each student should be able to:

1. Apply safety principles in collection, or handling patient specimen, infectious organisms, toxic reagents, and general laboratory equipments, and when otherwise utilize proper sterile and aseptic techniques in their handling.

2. Utilize and recognize technique and procedures used for specimen collection, transportation, storage, and suitability evaluations.

3. To prepare reagents & necessary sets according to protocols.

4. To process specimens appropriately-as requested, i.e., centrifugation, digestion, grinding, concentration, etc.

5. Recognize new methods for rapid identification in direct specimen.

6. Correlate laboratory findings with disease processes /pathophysiology.

7. To establish and maintain an acceptable quality control program, by adopting appropriate validation techniques & their documentation to support quality patient care.

8. Making decisions concerning the results of quality assurance measures, possible discrepancies, and instituting proper procedures to maintain accuracy and precision,

9. To be able the manage the use of time, resources, men, and machines powers to complete professional and technical tasks, within realistic constraints ,high ethical, standards and respect for confidentiality.

10. Performing analytical tests on clinical samples of fluids, blood, and tissue samples and other substances.

11. Design/evaluate and implement new methods/protocols.

12. Managing a lab which employs a team of specialists, managing administrative aspects of that lab.

13. Heading up research projects to develop new laboratory techniques.

14. Pursuing clinical research.

15. Recognize a problem, identify the cause, propose alternatives and determine practical solutions where no preset criteria are available.

16. Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting of clinical instruments.

17. Operating computer systems for data input, retrieval and analysis of information.

18. Maintaining and improving laboratory practices and quality control.

19. Exercising principles of management, safety, & supervision.

20. Providing leadership in teaching students and health care personnel proper laboratory practices, attitudes and skills defined as, or contained within, the clinical laboratory scientists’ body of knowledge.

21. Participate in continuing professional development and effective knowledge seeking strategies.

22. Perform specialized types of testing including PCR, cytogenics,

23. electrophoresis, paternity testing, flow cytometry, and cell marker technology.

This course covers the fundamental and principle concepts of human anatomy and physiology. Topics include an introduction to the structure and function of cells, tissues, and human organ systems, an overview of all the body systems - the nervous, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine and reproductive systems - and the mechanisms for maintaining body homeostasis.

The course deals with the chemical composition, properties and vital functions of biochemical molecules. These include carbohydrates, polysaccharides, proteins, fats, enzymes and vitamins, endocrine glands and various hormones. Laboratory practicals involve the use of qualitative and quantitative methods for the detection, identification and assays of these molecules.

This course provides an overview of Clinical Laboratory Sciences - the various disciplines within - and its role within the health care delivery system. Also will be discussed are the following: Types of specimens, their collection, and processing in the various sections of the Clinical Laboratories. The value of these results to clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases will be emphasized. Laboratory safety and phlebotomy will be introduced as well as medical ethics and regulations governing medical laboratories.

Study of haemopoiesis, sites of haemopoiesis, stem cells, and growth factors. The course also deals with the normal blood count and normal blood cells morphology, Haemoglobin structure and function of normal haemoglobin. Practical sessions involve the use of manual and automated methods of blood cells counting and differentiation.

This course provides the students with a basic knowledge of morphology, structures, classifications, modes of growth, and growth requirements, disease relationship of various micro-organisms. يركز المقرر على التركيبات والوظائف المختلفة للجزيئات الحيوية لكل من الكربوهيدرات، البروتينات، الدهون، الحمض النووي، الإنزيمات والهرمونات. الشق العملي لهذا المقرر يحتوى على دراسة طرق التحليل الكمي والكيفي لهذه الجزيئات بالإضافة لدراسة اضطرابات الأيض ونقص الإنزيمات وتعيينها.
The course focuses on structures and functions of the biomolecules carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymes and hormones. The practical part deals with application of clinical chemistry assay values in evaluating the integrity of these biomolecules – metabolic processes that maintain chemical homeostasis in humans. The course also covers inborn errors of metabolism and enzymes deficiency and their evaluation and assessment.

يختص المقرر بدراسة أساسيات المناعة وكذلك رد فعل الجسم تجاه الأجسام الغريبة، والمناعة الخلوية والمكتسبة، ودراسة الخلايا المناعية، بالإضافة إلى دراسة البروتينات المناعية من حيث تقسيمها وتركيبها والتعرف عليها. وسيدرس الطالب عملياً الاختبارات السيرولوجية والمناعية بأنواعها.
A course describing the basic concept of the immune processes, natural immunity, immunologic substances and antigens, humoral and cellular immunity, specificity, lymphocytes and thymus gland functions. The course also deals with the immunoglobulins: classification, structures and identification techniques, primary and secondary responses, susceptibility and concepts of cell mediated immunities and immunopathology. The student will also be instructed in the theory, practice ,and application of modern immunology/serology testing.

This course familiarizes the students with the types and structures of the Electron microscope and its operation. Techniques of specimen preparation for microscopic examination will be taught and the evaluation of results obtained will be discussed. The value of the electron microscopy unit in the hospital environment and in research will be stressed.

A lecture and applied laboratory course focusing on the principles of laboratory assays of the blood chemistry - glucose, nitrogenous compounds, lipids, bilirubin, calcium and phosphorus, acid-base regulation and electrolytes, diagnostic serum enzymes, endocrine glands-hormones and pregnancy, tumour markers and laboratory diagnosis of inborn-metabolic abnormalities-diseases. The course also emphasizes the quality control program, physiological influences on test results, interpretation of results versus normal values, as obtained according to written manual or automated instructions.

The course topics include the types and sources of specimens that are received in cytopathology and the collection of these specimens. The different techniques and staining methods for the preparation of smears from exfoliated cells of the received specimens (gynecologic and non-gynecologic) are fully discussed. Emphasis will be put on microscopic examination of the smears to differentiate between normal and malignant cells.

A course that covers systemic pathogenic bacteria including mycoplasmal, richettsial and chlamydial diseases of humans, their pathogenesis, modes of transmission, epidemiology, methods for isolation and identification. Areas of study include: aerobic gram-positive cocci, bacilli and acid fast bacilli, the parvobacteria: Haemophilus, Brucella, Bortedella, Legionella, Neisseria and Enterobacteriaceae, Helicobacter and Campylobacter, as well as methods of testing their susceptibility to antibacterial agents.

This course describes the serologic and immunologic tests for the diagnosis of infectious agents and autoimmune disorders. The immune response to specific infections will be discussed. Emphasis will be on the the principle of the various serological techniques used in the clinical immunology laboratory - Agglutination, Precipitation, Immunofuoresence, Enzyme immuno assays, B and T cells functions, flowcytometry, as well as HLA classes and their applications in diagnosis of disease - susceptibility and organ transplants.

This course will apply and enforce knowledge and skills acquired in CLAB 471. Observation and study of less commonly isolated bacteria such as gram-positive and gram-negative anaerobes, non-fermenters bacteria, opportunistic bacteria in relation to various intensive care units. Additionally regrouping pathogenic bacteria in relation to body-infection systems with emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms of the diseases they cause; proper methods of collecting ,transporting and processing appropriate clinical specimens, and laboratory methods, cultural and non cultural, that are used for their identification. In the laboratory component, students will process blood, cerebral spinal fluid, sputum, urine, throat swabs, and stool specimens. Emphasis will be placed on isolation and identification of bacteria, selection of appropriate antibiotic therapy, quality assurance and safety.

This course deals with the normal blood coagulation, the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases and the various techniques used to assay haemostasis. The laboratory practicals involve the performance, interpretation and quality control of routine and specialized tests in the evaluation of haemostasis. يعتمد مشروع التخرج على تكليف كل طالب بتصميم مشروع دراسة مستقلة في أحد مجالات المختبرات. والهدف من مشروع التخرج هو تمكين الطالب من تحليل البيانات، وتقييم المعلومات الواردة في المشروع، وفهمها بشكل صحيح، وعلى المشرف أن يرشد الطالب ويوجهه، ويتم التقييم في النهاية على مناقشة شفهية وتقرير مكتوب بصورة صحيحة.
In the graduation project, each student shall design and complete an independent study project in one or more areas of concentrated study. The purpose of the graduation project is to assure that the student is able to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding. It is the responsibility of each student to fulfill the requirements. The Supervisor(s) will provide guidance and direction in the fulfillment of these responsibilities. Projects should be undertaken by individual students. The end product will be based on oral presentations to a jury committee and a comprehensive written report.

يمد هذا المقرر الطالب بالتدريب الإكلينيكي اللازم في مختبر أمراض الدم، كما يمكنه من التعرف على مكونات الدم المختلفة وعدها بطريقة يدوية وباستخدام الأجهزة، وتعرّفه مدى صلاحية العينات للفحص، وكيفية اختيار المتبرع بالدم، ومعرفة النتائج الطبيعية وغير الطبيعية، كما تشمل التعريف باضطرابات الأوعية الدموية والتجلط والصفائح الدموية، مع تدريسه وسائل الأمان والجودة النوعية داخل مختبر أمراض الدم.
The course provides the students with hospital training in routine system of haematology laboratory and to identify and enumerate formed elements in blood and other body fluids using appropriate manual and/or automated techniques. To enable the students to determine specimen acceptability, handling, processing, selecting blood donors and identifying normal/abnormal results, including those in vascular, coagulation, platelets and fibrinolytic disorders, and to comply with safety and quality control procedures.

يكسب هذا المقرر الطالب الخبرة الإكلينيكية اللازمة التي تمكنه من الطرق التحليلية لتعيين الاضطرابات المختلفة، كما تعطيه المهارات الإكلينيكية للتعامل مع العينات وطرق فحصها والتدريب على الأجهزة والجودة النوعية وتحليل البيانات، وبعد الانتهاء من هذا المقرر يستطيع الطالب من أداء الاختبارات الروتينية والخاصة على العينات من أمصال وبلازما والسوائل المختلفة يدوياً أو باستخدام الأجهزة حسب القواعد المعمول بها بالمستشفى.
A supervised hospital experience in the application of chemical-analytical methods for the clinical laboratory detection of disorders. To develop laboratory skills in overall organization, safety precautions, specimen handling, acceptability, techniques, instrumentation and quality control procedures and statistics. After completing the course, the student should be able to perform the routine and special tests on serum, plasma or any body fluids according to manual or automated equipment established protocol in a hospital set up.

يكسب هذا المقرر الطالب الخبرة اللازمة لفحص القطاعات النسيجية والخلوية لعينات المرضى، ويتعلم الطالب تقنية تجهيز القطاعات النسيجية بالتجميد أو بالبارافين وفحصها مجهرياً، وأيضاً طرق الصباغة المختلفة واستخدام الأجهزة، وتعليمه وسائل الأمان المتبعة داخل مختبر الأنسجة والخلايا، كما يتعلم الطالب طريقة عمل المجهر الإلكتروني واستخداماته داخل المستشفى.
Hospital-supervised clinical experience in routine examination of histopathological and cytopathological specimens. The students will learn histological techniques as paraffin and frozen sections, microscopic examination of exfoliative or aspirated cells, staining procedures, instrumentation, and safety precautions routinely used in histopathology and cytopathology sections of a medical laboratory in a hospital set-up. The student will also learn about the working of the EM unit in the hospital set up.

يختص هذا المقرر بدراسة كيفية إدارة المختبرات في إطار النظم المعلوماتية المتطورة وتقييمها من حيث مراقبة الجودة والأداء، وكذلك تعليم وتطوير المهارات الفردية وروح الفريق، والتركيز على ضمان الجودة للأجهزة واستخدامها بالطريقة المثلى والمستهدفة، والتعريف بأنظمة السلامة والوقاية، وتعليم الطالب نظم وطرق حفظ المعلومات بطريقة متطورة.
The course deals with the basic principles of supervision and management, including performance management, coaching and counseling. Total Quality Management, laboratory inspections and accreditation, interpersonal and team skills, fiscal management skills (budgets and cost containment), and method and instrument evaluation. Additional instruction is provided on choosing and maintaining laboratory information systems.
